Back from the Abyss

So I've been a very negligent blogger. I will soon have a post that will explain why and I promise you will understand. In the meantime it's back blogging about real people in love. So without further ado...

It seems there is always one image that looks just as good in Black and White as in color. This wedding it was this one. Which do you like better?

Heather and Ross

Working with Von DeVore Photography I was privileged to photograph the beautiful wedding of Heather and Ross.

I can't decide if I like this one better in color or black and white:

What a sweet moment!

I'm usually a stickler for having these scene setters in color. But I like it in Black and White, too I think because of the moody night sky.

Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary

A few years back I photographed a wedding where the groom and his party got ready and stayed the night before the wedding at the Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary.  I've wanted to go back there to take the tiger tour for ages and we finally got down there.

I love this one.  He looks just like my house cats.

I love this one in Black and White, too!

They also have a lion.

Carrie and Tyson with Von DeVore

Awhile back I had the privilege of shooting this awesome wedding with Von DeVore Photography.  These images make it clear to me why Fall weddings have become so popular lately.

The bride's brother looked on as she got ready.

There are so many images from this wedding that explain why I love the getting ready portion of the day.  Most people think of the "getting ready" photos and the close-up for the bride as she puts on her lipstick, her mom zipping up the back for the dress, or a detail shot of the gown hanging in front of a window.  There's nothing wrong with those images and I always take them if they happen while I am there, but images like this really show what it feels like to wait for the wedding to start.  The bridesmaids were having fun and wanted to make the bride laugh.  Clearly, it worked.

Fine Art at the Lievense Gallery

I'm in Michigan right now celebrating an exciting development that seemed to fall from the sky.  16 of my photographs from my time in Mexico are being displayed at the Lievense Gallery of the Holland Area Arts Council in Holland, MI where I attended college.  The show came about somewhat suddenly but I am just thrilled to be included in it.  The show exhibits the work of 4 artists and their work showcasing the Day of the Dead.  This weekend was the best weekend for Joe and I to come up and it also happens to be homecoming.  I can hardly wait to see my former professors and roommates and to reflect on all that I have learned since graduation.  My passion for photography and my passion for learning about the world go hand in hand.

For those of you who aren't familiar with it, the Day of the Dead is an ancient, joyous festival celebrated across Latin America and the Caribbean.  It stems from the indigenous traditions that believed the departed spirits were closest to this world.  Families decorate grave stones and bring drinks and fruit to share with the spirit.  I've always been incredibly grateful to the people of Mexico for sharing this with me.
